I really enjoy my Echo 5 as a bedside table alarm clock.

I enjoy my Echo 5 as a smart assistant (Alexa) to turn my lights/fans on off.

I don’t really enjoy my Echo 5 as a media player or communications device. Mostly because services seem sketchy/not as full featured as in the US/UK, less people in Australia are using Alexa in comparison to Siri/Google and they all refuse to talk to each other adequately.

I have a perfectly good YouTube family subscription (so the Olds and the Youngling don’t get the ads) and the perk of that is the music sub.. which I can’t use on the Echo easily. There is a YouTube app on the FireTV, but it doesn’t extend to the Echo where it is just the browser version. I can’t cast from the YouTube Music app on my phone to the Echo as a cast target.. it is just not an option. I’m not going to pay a $12-20 a month for an Amazon Music subscription and everytime I ask it play something it ‘kindly’ suggests that I enable voice purchasing and upgrade to Amazon Music before actually playing what I wanted it to from Prime Music.

The drop-in functionality looks like a practical and useful add on to the usual call functionality on these type of devices but you need to know other people in the Amazon ecosystem to make good use of it. I wanted to test it out with my Fire HD 8 tablet but I parallel imported that quite a few years ago and Amazon AU no longer supports Fire Tablets in Australia so all sorts of weirdness with that (amazing as an e-reader, home control device though).

The screen is quite slow to respond to touch which is a shame and it makes me wish I could access/control more of its functionality within the Alexa app on my phone.. there’s a lot of cool options with clock faces.. and it says ai can set my own pictures to a clock face in the app, but as soon as I try it says it can’t connect to the Echo despite being able to view and change everything else that is exposed to it.

Great potential, and a superb alarm clock (got the 5 because I read reviews saying the 8 was less useful as a clock).

Despite a lot of negative reviews, I bought this at a super low price while on special – just to add another room that has an Echo (Dot), regardless of if the screen etc was any good.
Pleasantly surprised how the screen shows my Ring camera views with simple commands like “Alexa – show Front Door”.
As per many reviews, it’s not all that great understanding some simple commands. Is it perhaps a tad “deaf”?
I tried a certain command 3 times today – raising my voice each try.
Eventually, my Dot in my office 2 rooms away tried to respond, but couldn’t – because it was a video command, and the office Dot is one of those early version flat disc shaped ones that is basically only a speaker.
Perhaps there’s a Firmware update somewhere down the track that will make voice recognition a lot better on this Echo 5?
That’s the only thing I find that is a bit flakey on this unit.
The sound is as per many reviews – rich in Bass, but becomes muddy with no hi’s once you crank the volume up.
But that’s not what I use it for. 800w of 7.2 takes care of that.
If you’re just looking to add another Dot device- with video – to your home network, this is a good choice for somewhere like your Bedroom.
Sure – it’s nowhere near the specs of Dot 8, it’s also 70 bucks (on special) v’s 300 odd.
Not for looking up recipes to cook from etc – just an alarm clock radio. And that it shows my security cams views is a bonus.
Haven’t tried video conferencing with it, and probably never will – that’s a job for other devices more suited.
Overall, quite happy with it – though it is a little ‘deaf’ and a bit glitchy sometimes.

I bought Echo/Alexa recently when it was on sale and the price appealed to me.
I was not expecting any real fireworks but am pleasantly surprised with it’s functionalities.
Alexa replies when greeted and provides information when asked. The clock is brilliant. I have all my photos on it. It gives me a full rundown on the weather, including the UV index, rain forecast and even tells me if I will need the umbrella. It plays most of the music that I request but is limited to free Amazon playlists. If need more, I’ll have to subscribe to the various services. I can see Prime videos and Netflix as I subscribe to them. YouTube is free and has a lot of entertainment on offer. Alexa pays my requested radio stations and podcasts, sets the alarm, tells jokes, shares recipes and answers general knowledge questions.
I have not been able to make phone calls successfully as yet. Alexa makes the call but it goes to the message bank of the receiver with just my name. I am not able to talk to them.
I am happy with my purchase and hope to explore Alexa’s capabilities further.

The “Alexa” Echo show is great to uptech your home.

By putting my photos on the unit & adding some smart switches, Alexa can program lights to turn on automatically, flick through the photos to make the place homier, play my music and more.

Each day is a discovery. It’s fun & entertaining but it’s jokes make “Dad” jokes look good 😢

I love this clock it does so much. Alexa is great you can ask her anything. I love the wake up routine when she tells you your calendar for the day and the weather. The only thing I thought it would include the stand in the price but you have to buy it separate and it’s quite expensive so I have opted not to buy it. It works fine without it except the camera is on an angle and only takes a video of the roof, so when I want to use it I put a book underneath at the back and that fixes the problem. A part from that it’s a good little unit.
